Om Namah Shivaya! Blessings of Lord Shiva on Shivratri
What a beautiful blessing it was today to be able to offer sacred water onto Lord Shiva, especially my favorite form of Shiva, the dancing Lord Nataraj, the Lord of dance. This month is called Shravan, it is the month in the year that is very holy and dedicated to Lord Shiva. During this month the Shivratri is considered very holy and auspicious. Typically during the month of Shravan and especially on Shivratri there are tens of millions of young men and boys, occasionally women, traveling by foot carrying water from their local rivers to offer to the sacred image of Shiva at the Neelkanth Mahadev Temple, just up in the mountains above Parmarth Niketan. Then they take water from mother Ganga and carry it, again by foot, back to the Shiva temples in their own cities. Tens of millions of people walking all day and night, sleeping by the side of the road, just in devotion to Lord Shiva. This year, tragically due to the pandemic, the Yatra had to understandably be canceled. This year is the time to offer that sacred prayer and devotion to Lord Shiva in our own homes, in our own minds and in our town hearts. In the Trinity of divine expression, Lord Brahma is the power Of creation, Lord Vishnu is the power of sustenance and Lord Shiva is the power of dissolution or destruction. But it is destruction that is, not malicious, but rather in the service of creating space for new creation. It is a dissolution of the untruth in order for the truth to be revealed. It is the dissolution of the darkness in order for the light to be revealed. It is the dissolution of the falls in order for the truth. It was a blessing to offer the sacred water on behalf of all of our family all across the world.
